Sacrilege In Noorem - A play on the Maturing of
the AIDS Epidemic in a Cameroon Community.
Sacrilige in Noorem is a one act, five- scene drama involving three
families. In an interplay of naivete, ignorance, carelessness,
cultural misperceptions, societal pressures, and traditional African
beliefs, wives, husbands and friends drive each other to extremes
endangering the community through ill-advised sexual practices. Condom
use is still regarded as a taboo in certain African circles. No death
is of natural cause in the traditional Africa which leads to the
accusation of a family relative of witchcraft practices that resulted
in numerous deaths occurring within the Edots, a middle class urban
family.
Through a series of rich African choreographed performances, the
sorrowful atmosphere of deaths are lightened by the rather exorbitant
but graceful African funerals. The play is fairly tight in action and
is presented in a simple and straight forward language, intended to
reach the lay population with information on the understanding of the
disease, on how to prevent transmission of AIDS and other STDs and
mechanisms of public health intervention remotely concerned with the
issues at hand. Hopefully it will be subtitled into other African
languages.
- 3 drama performances in 3 provinces of Cameroon
- 8 times aired on Cameroon Radio and Television
